The State of the Public Sector in Victoria supports an inclusive, high-performing and engaged workforce.

The report covers:

Public sector workforce data sets

We publish data sets for 9 areas, covering June 2015 to June 2019.

We source these figures from our annual workforce and executive data collection that cover over 1800 Victorian public sector employers.

Age profile (XLS, 45KB)

This file has the following age profile measures for Victorian public sector employees by gender and industry group:

  • average age
  • median age
  • headcount by age group

Employment numbers over time (XLS, 66KB)

This file has employment numbers in headcount and full-time equivalent terms for:

  • the Victorian public sector by industry group, gender and Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identity
  • major occupations in public entities by gender
  • Victorian Public Service grade and occupation-specific classifications by gender

Employment status: ongoing, fixed-term and casual employment (XLS, 77KB)

This file has Victorian public sector ongoing, fixed-term including secondees and casual employment figures expressed as a percentage of headcount and full-time equivalent terms by:

  • executive headcount by industry, gender, age group and classification band

  • total number of public service executives for each public service organisation by gender

This file has Victorian public sector personal leave usage for non-casual employees over the past 5 financial years by industry group.

The following measures are shown:

  • annual personal leave usage as days per full-time equivalent employee
  • volume of personal leave usage each year by frequency

This file has the following remuneration measures, based on full-time base salaries for non-casual Victorian public sector employees:

  • median base salary and distribution of employees within each salary band by industry, gender and Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identity
  • median base salary for each major occupation in public entities by gender
  • mean base salary for each public service classification by gender
  • median base salary for each public-service-occupation-specific classification by gender

This file has the number and rate of non-casual public sector employees separating and commencing each financial year by:

  • age group
  • industry

This file has the proportion of public sector employees working in each specified Victorian region by industry.

Board and board member profile data sets

We publish board and board member profile data from over 3500 boards and about 32,000 board members.

We source this data from the Government Appointments and Public Entities Database (GAPED).

This file shows the number of Victorian public sector boards and the number of board members for each portfolio department and ministerial portfolio.

The file also has a list of Victorian public sector boards showing:

  • classification
  • status as a major board
  • status as an employer
  • number of board members

It also has a profile of board members for each department and ministry portfolio from June 2018 to 2019 showing numbers by:

  • gender
  • age
  • residential location of metropolitan Melbourne or regional Victoria
  • volunteer status
  • diversity groups of board members who are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, have disability and are culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD)

In the file, we’ve grouped school councils, small cemetery trusts and small land management committees together.
