The VPSC has re-issued the Code of Conduct for Victorian Public Sector Employees and the companion code for employees of Special Bodies, with effect from 1 June 2015.

The Codes of Conduct are important for all public sector employees. They prescribe the behaviours that exemplify the public sector values of Responsiveness, Integrity, Impartiality, Accountability, Respect, Leadership and Human Rights.

The re-issued Codes contain only minor amendments and do not create any new expectations regarding employee behaviour. However, it is important for public sector employees to regularly refresh their understanding of the Codes of Conduct. They should actively consider how the Codes requirements apply to their work, the actions they take and the decisions they make on a day-to-day basis.

Public sector leaders should also engage with their employees to reinforce how the Codes of Conduct guide the way they work. Their promotion of the Codes of Conduct must be ongoing to be effective, and be embedded within their organisation’s policies, practices and culture.

To assist them in this process, the VPSC has developed for employers an online self-assessment tool on values and Code of Conduct implementation.

When public sector employees consistently act in accordance with the public sector values and the Codes of Conduct, it strengthens public sector organisations’ capacity to operate effectively and achieve their objectives. A failure to adhere to the public sector values and Codes of Conduct undermines the confidence of the Government, the Parliament, and the Victorian community in the public sector.

The VPSC encourages all public sector employees to familiarise themselves with the re-issued Codes of Conduct.
