A new Victorian Government initiative Recruit Smarter will target bias in recruitment helping employers to take advantage of the full breadth of skills, experience and talent that exists across the Victorian workforce.

Unconscious bias occurs where managers and HR departments unintentionally make assumptions against job candidates based on gender, age, culture, background or religion.

It is important that the Victorian public sector finds ways to better support diversity and develop a culture of inclusion in our workplaces. Greater diversity and inclusion will support more innovation, creativity and high productivity.

In the first instance a pilot project will look at addressing unconscious bias at the recruitment stage by removing personal details such as name, age, and gender when assessing people’s job applications.

The Victorian Public Sector Commission is proud to be supporting government departments and agencies in implementing the 18 month pilot.
