Aim

The aim of this module is to:

  • select one or more scenarios to develop further
  • explore the impacts that the scenario or scenarios will have on your work.

Objectives

By the end of this module, you’ll understand the service or product your business area provides and the impact of your scenario on:

  • business processes
  • people
  • organisation culture
  • technology.

Activities in this module

Activity 1: Pull of the future

Use the Pull of the Future activity to help you select the scenario you want to develop more.

You’ll look at the likely impact of the following on your organisation:

  • past successes and failures
  • cultural beliefs and social norms
  • emerging trends
  • stakeholder aspirations and expectations
  • any urgent need to improve how prepared you are to operate in a scenario.

To get the most out of this activity, it’s good to have developed a range of scenarios in module 3.

How to do this activity

Use the Venn diagram in the:

Pull of the future template (PowerPoint, 1.1MB)

Plot your scenarios on the Venn diagram to help you select the scenarios you want to develop more.

Where you answer ‘yes’ to more than one question, place the scenario in the section where the circles overlap.

If you answer ‘yes’ to all 3 questions, place the scenario in the centre of the Venn diagram.

The numbers in the Venn diagram indicate recommended priority levels, with 1 being most important.

Activity 2: Simulating impacts – the ripple effect of each scenario

In this activity, you’ll work out the impacts on 3 organisational elements.

How to do this activity

Use the:

Simulating impacts template (PowerPoint, 1.2MB)

Use the questions below to detail the flow on effects of each impact

For example, your organisation may need to handle more data.

To do this, your organisation will need more data skills, which could impact:

  • what learning and development you need to offer
  • recruitment processes
  • your talent pool.
Process
  • What will the impacts of this scenario be on your organisation’s processes?
  • What are some of the financial impacts?
  • What are the flow on effects of these impacts?
  • How will this impact diversity and inclusion?
Technology
  • What technology will be needed in this scenario?
  • What opportunities are there for augmentation or automation?
  • What technical capabilities will you need?
  • What kind of user experience do you need to create?
  • What are the flow on effects of these impacts?
  • How will this impact diversity and inclusion?
People and organisational culture
  • What do you need in place to support changes?
  • What capabilities will your workforce need?
  • What will you expect of your leaders?
  • What workplace values and norms will you need?
  • How will you measure performance?
  • What will career paths look like?
  • What are the flow on effects of these impacts?
  • How will this impact diversity and inclusion?
