Part-time employment rates in the overall public sector are rising.

At June 2024:

  • 24.8% of men worked part-time, up from 21.7% in 2020
  • 54.3% of women worked part-time, up from 53.7% in 2020.

Victorian Public Service (VPS)

  • 80.3% employed on an ongoing basis
  • 18.5% employed on a fixed-term basis
  • 1.2% employed casually
  • 13.7% work part-time
  • 73.6% said they used a flexible work arrangement (source: People matter survey 2024)
  • full-time VPS employees are more likely to be aged 25 to 34 (27.3%) than part-time employees (17.2%)
  • 7.2% of executives who are women work part-time compared to 2.9% who are men.

Part-time employment rates in the VPS are lower than the overall public sector and are trending down.

At June 2024:

  • 5.0% of men worked part-time, down from 8.6% in 2019
  • 19.6% of women worked part-time, down from 26.0% in 2020.
