This case study relates to the VPS value of integrity.
Background
Awareness of how to manage integrity risks is increasing at the Department of Education thanks to the Integrity Capability Tool.
The new online tool has been introduced to support staff to identify the knowledge, skills and capabilities required to manage integrity risks in different roles throughout the department.
It ensures integrity is part of everyday decision-making for all staff.
Challenge
Staff need to be aware of integrity risks in their work so they could best serve a high-quality education system.
Staff can use the interactive web-based tool to map their required knowledge and skills for 8 different integrity topics specific to their role.
They can then discover the various policies and resources, as well as training and education options available to help them acquire that knowledge and capability.
The tool met a need to promote personal accountability for the management of integrity risks staff are responsible for. Increasing capability and awareness of integrity risks contributes to a wider departmental culture of integrity in keeping with Victorian public sector values.
Result
Research shows strong integrity performance underpins the community’s trust in government services.
The tool brings key integrity risks front of mind for staff in their work, including the management of conflict of interest, fraud and corruption control, recordkeeping and financial responsibilities.
It also supports staff to understand that integrity is part of everybody’s role, not just departmental leadership, and that improvements in staff capability to manage integrity risks increases the integrity culture of the entire organisation.
