We’ve put together a list of things you can to do help your team when they work remotely.
Help your team have visibility
When you work remotely, it’s a lot harder to help everyone have visibility of what’s going on.
To help your team with visibility:
- be transparent about what you’re working on
- give them regular updates on work or news you know about
- involve them in your work where it’s okay to do so
You can give them these updates at team meetings or you can set up a virtual Kanban board.
Help them stay connected
The physical act of your team being together in the office creates a sense of belonging.
So you need to make an effort to mimic this in a remote setting.
To help your team stay connected, you can:
- Create channels on programs like Microsoft Teams or Slack for social chats
- Have regular check-ins with each person in your team to see how they’re going but not to talk about their work
- Set up times for virtual coffee catch-ups or a virtual ‘happy hour’ after work
- Turn on videos in all meetings to see friendly faces and make a connection
Help to maintain a work-life balance
When your team works remotely, it’s a lot harder to define work and life.
But a clear boundary between work and life will help with productivity and wellbeing
To help your team maintain a work-life balance, you can suggest they:
- Have a ritual for when they start and finish work, such as going for a walk after work to switch off or listening to music to kick start the day
- Not use personal devices for work
- Take breaks away from their desk
- Try to set up their work area away from their living area
Help to get things done
Your team will be more productive if they plan out their day with goals and targets.
This will help them feel like they achieve things each day.
To help your team get things done, you can suggest they:
- Create a plan at the start of each day on what they want to achieve that day
- Group similar activities together in the day, such as have meetings in the morning and task work in the afternoon
- Put time in their diary for deep, focused work on specific tasks when they don’t want to be distracted
- Share what they want to achieve each day with the team, which you could do with a daily stand up
- Speak with you at the end of the day to get a report on their progress
