The Victorian Aboriginal Affairs Framework

The Victorian Aboriginal Affairs Framework 2013-2018 measures progress to close the gap in Aboriginal disadvantage in 6 areas:

  • maternal health and early childhood health and development
  • education and training
  • economic participation
  • health, housing and wellbeing
  • safe families and communities and equitable justice outcomes; and
  • strong culture, engaged people and confident communities.

Victorian Aboriginal Economic Strategy

The Victorian Aboriginal Economic Strategy 2013–2020 has 3 goals:

  1. build foundations and aspirations for jobs and business throughout life;
  2. more job opportunities across the economy; and
  3. grow Aboriginal enterprise and investment.

National Indigenous Reform Agreement

Through the National Indigenous Reform Agreement, the Commonwealth, State and Territory governments committed to work together to close the gap to reduce disadvantage faced by Aboriginal people.

Every year, the Prime Minister reports on progress against the Agreement’s targets:

  • close the gap in life expectancy within a generation
  • halve the gap in mortality rates for Indigenous children under five within a decade
  • ensure all Indigenous four years-olds in remote communities have access to early childhood education within five years
  • halve the gap for Indigenous students in reading, writing and numeracy within a decade
  • halve the gap for Indigenous students in year 12 attainment or equivalent attainment rates by 2020
  • halve the gap in employment outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians within a decade.
